  1. After thinking over my initial reaction, I believe I know why having an email with our full name for this course is a requirement and not an option. My first reason is that we are all adults, and adults should have an email that is for professional use; such as school, work, and networking. My second reason is that it is a sign of respect to our professor. They should be able to know who is emailing them rather than trying to stiffer through an email that does not properly identify us. My last reason for this requirement is to help prepare us for the real world. We must get in the habit of having a professional email, if not people in the professional world, such as future employers, will just scroll pass our email because it gives off a negative impression before they meet us.

  3. After reflecting back on the topic of having your full name as your email, I began to realize that it is a smart thing to do. The reason for this requirement is for the professor to know exactly who the assignments and emails are coming from. Without having your full name the professor does not know or has a hard time figuring out who to give the credit to. Later on in life when you have a professional job, in order to be taken seriously and to be seen as a professional you shouldn't have an email that comes off childish.

  4. When I first read the email exchange between the professor and the student I initially thought that the professor could have been a little nicer with letting the student know that she needed a new email instead of being cold and short, but after I continued to read on and went back to read it again I changed my reaction. The directions about what the email address that is needed for the course are very clear and not hard to follow. The girl stated that her name was not available on gmail but the professor stated in the directions that you could add any numbers to your email so that it would become available. The student could have figured out any way to create an appropriate email that would have been suitable for the course. I completely understand why this requirement is necessary for the professor in general and even more so for an online course, because the professor needs to be aware with who he is receiving the assignments from and who he is conversing with. I do not believe the professor was wrong in any way with how he responded, but the student was just not cooperative and did not want to make the appropriate changes to her email for the course.

  5. At first I was confused , I was expecting a article or something . I honestly read the whole thing like 5 times before really understanding what was going on . I can see where the professor is coming especially when the class is based fully online . Having your name has your email would help when grading or finding to organizes the email so that everyone gets a final grade . But if the email had a part of her name I don't see what the problem is . But as we get more into the professional world an email is something you should already have . But to each its own .

    1. I was also very confused and read the whole thing at least 5 times to completely understand what was going on and yes we should already have an email with our full name, I do not see why one should argue on this at all.

  6. Initially, I though the professor was being cold. The fact that the student was unable to find their full name on gmail seemed like an adequate excuse for not having the required email address. However, as Nicoletta Anthoulis said above, Gmail was not the only email address that could have been used. The student could have made the effort to try and see if their full name would be available on any other e-mail platforms. I believe if the student had shown that they echausted every possibility of using their first and last name on various email platforms, the professor may have been more lenient. The bottom line is that a professional email is a requirement for this course. And so, the student should have done their best to abide by the rule.I think the reason for the requirement is strictly to eliminate confusions and help facilitate the communication between the professor and the student. There may be cases where more than one students in a course have the same first name. Having an email with your full name would decrease the confusion that may be involved when the professor receives assignments. Another reason may be related to how the professor, personally, organizes the documents that students send.If the file names for our assignments must have our first and last names, then it makes complete sense for our emails to match as well.

    1. Hey Mitsuka. I think instead of using a different email platform, it would be easier for the student to add numbers to the email address, as recommended by the professor.

  7. My initial reaction came mostly from the student's last email. I thought it was gutsy/arrogant and I would never be able to send the same email. With regard to the email policy, I understand why it's necessary (at times I have had to sort through email addresses like sparkles92 or other similarly childish ones, and it's very frustrating). I think it's important to have a professional email address with your name especially for school and work when communicating with near-strangers, and it can help the professor organize his inbox because he/she can search for emails from a specific person without knowing their email address. If someone's first and last name isn't available as an email address, there are many ways to add numbers or letters to make it meet the parameters of what a professional email address should look like.

My initial response to this email exchange was that the professor was a little short in his/her responses. The professor could have just explained again why it is necessary for students to have their full name in their email address. I 100% agree with the professor, that not only is it more professional but it also makes it easier for the professor to find emails/assignments that were emailed previously. We all have/had childish emails, but if it is a requirement for the course, I don't believe it's too much to ask for to just have your full name, include some numbers and problem solved.

    1. Hi Izabella. I agree that the professor's reply was short, but I would more accurately use the term succinct. He gets right to the point without adding extra fluff, the same he recommends for us. Moreover, it would be tedious for the professor to repeat the requirements for all students who did not carefully read the information provided to us. I know this example is of one student, but imagine many more students sending the same email. Would you not be annoyed repeating yourself over and over again?

  9. This is an example of a person that does not closely follow instructions. If she had read the email policy, she would know what to do if she cannot use her full name as her email. All she needed to do was add a few numbers after her name.

I believe that this email requirement is necessary. It allows the Professor to easily find and manage the emails of his students. It also allows you to communicate with the Professor in a respectful manner. Sending assignments with a silly email handle diminishes the value of the work you're doing.

  10. My initial response to the beginning of the email was: "the professor clearly outlined ALL details and responses to any issues that a student may approach in the process of creating a full email address. What is the student not understanding?" With this initial reaction subsiding as I take a step back from the assignment to gather myself, I became infuriated reading the very last email with the term "OBNOXIOUS." We had an entire assignment on email etiquette, and even if we did not, that is not the proper form of addressing a professor, a respected individual much more knowledgeable than yourself in many aspects. There was even a smiley face at the end! I sincerely hope this example is not from a real student.

I think the reason for this requirement is so that the professor can easily identify a student without resolving the email address as a puzzle. Furthermore, this requirement is extremely useful for all students' future so that they may gain credibility as professionals at future job interviews.

Good evening everyone, after reading the email conversation I thought the professor could have handled it a little better. For example, instead of saying "I don't have time for this", they could have just said refer to the syllabus, or read the syllabus. However, I understand the frustration the professor must have felt; all the directions are written out clearly, it is our job to read everything that is provided and follow the directions. The way the student responded at the end was a bit rude and unnecessary. I understand a lot of people want to use emails that they already have rather then creating a new one; although it a simple task, it can be a hassle. But after having the first response and reading the syllabus, the rest was unnecessary.

I believe the reason for this requirement is first of all as stated in the syllabus, we are all adults and should have professional emails. In order for people to take us seriously in our professional lives. The second reason for this would be to make it a little easier on the professor. If the professor doesn't know who the email is from how will you receive your grade. I'm sure we all have busy lives as does the professor. This requirement may seem silly to a lot of people, but it makes a big difference.

  12. It is simply proper etiquette and professional to have an e-mail address consisting of your first and last name. As the other students mentioned, an improper e-mail address is a sign that an individual is unrefined and ill-prepared for the workforce.

Honestly, after reading this document my first reaction was " oh heck no." The first email with Jane Doe when the student clearly said she "didn't understand" the professor should have addressed the situation in a nicer tone rather than "I don't have time for this." Yes I understand that the email policy was clearly explained via email, but there are some people in this world that will NOT understand something the first or even second time. This why this is college, we are here to learn. The second student clearly could have found an email if she would have reread the email requirements, but again, all it would have taken was a response from the professor stating to just refer back to the requirements where it suggests adding numbers after your name. If this would have happened there would have been a slim to no chance that the student would have responded in such a sarcastic and rude way. At the end of the day, its word of mouth from the students that spread quickly in terms of whether you should look forward to taking a professors course or not. I do completely understand why it is important to have an email address with your first and last name due to professionalism and to benefit the professor when handling grades of students especially with an online course.

    1. Justine, I have to agree with you. Yes, its annoying to have to answer questions that seem obvious or repeatedly over and over again. But that comes with the territory. Certain things are just a package deal when you choose to assume a specific role. Like famous people who don't like paparazzi as if they didn't know that that's what happens when you become famous and put yourself out there. A professor should be patient, understanding, and compassionate. Life is hard enough to navigate and it's up to the individual to decide if their going to be a beacon of guidance and support or just another roadblock.

  14. I somewhat agree with the professor's point of view. College is a professional field, students should not email their professors from silly email accounts.
I can't bring myself to fully support the professor because I don't understand why he/she needs his/her students to have specifically first name-last name emails. Email accounts run scarce nowadays. Sure as some other students commented, she could add numbers to her name - but what if she’s been using this account for years? I don’t think she needs to change it just for this one specific class.

  15. I completely agree with Professor Carasi. In college, you should definitely have your full name included in your email address. It should not include any fluffy language or catch-phrases. In the working environment, a work email address will always include your name. In asking for an email address with a full first and last name, Professor Carasi is setting up the student for their future. It may be annoying for a student to make this email initially, but then the student has this email for life.

  16. I believe the main idea here is that the processor is asking one of his students to create a email with his first and last. I do not see any reason why any student should have an objection with this requirement, as it is very reasonable. The whole point of college is to prepare students to work in a professional workforce in the future, and practicing a simple little habit of having an email with your first and last name can only help one. I completely agree with Professor Carasi, as there are many benefits of having an email consisting of your full name. One main benefit is that the professor immediately knows who is emailing and their assignments can never be mixed up with another student. Apart from the benefits, a small requirement of this kind should not be seen as a problem since it is being asked from college students, who should already have one as it is the first thing that is asked in many freshman classes. There should be no excuse of not having an emailing with your full name because you can always add numbers and various symbols which can differentiate your emails from others. In simple words just create one and do not feel offended if the professor asked you to do it in a rude way as it is a very easy task.

  17. I think everyone should have an email with their first and last name. It is professional and people will always appreciate it.I don't see why a student cannot create an email with the name. Ive had a personalized email for years and its recognized. It is also easier for the professor to see who you are immediately
