COMMENT:

Should we continue to have polls or not?

Are you committed to answering every time? (If only a few answer, they are not worth my time.)

  1. Polls are hard good and bad. But it depends on its importance are the situation. One example comes to mind is the 2016 election. The world had thought the election will go to the experienced, educated, and good for the country candidate. And every poll had one candidate winning by a large margin. How wrong were we. After the fact, we discovered many voters lied of fear of the back lash and criticism of others. Some researchers call it” sophomore affect”. Professors would use their students for their case study and generalizes the finding as big part of the vast and diverse population. When it’s not.
However, certain situation polling works when it’s done openly in a room when all can see and all the facts are considered, outcomes and honesty are present.

  2. I think polls are a good idea for a class like this. It's a good way for the professor to get quick, specific feedback and it takes only a short amount of time. I can commit to answering the polls, and I would be interested in reading the responses because I want to see if anyone shares my feelings about specific aspects of the course.

    1. I agree completely with being interested in reading the responses by my fellow classmates, to see if they share the same worries about the work that we need to do and just to get an idea on how everyone else is handling everything that needs to be done.

    2. Yocheved, like you, I appreciate the polls greatly because they allow me to compare my thoughts of the class to those of my classmates. I often seek to understand how others feel about the class to analyze whether I am being rational or emotional.

  3. I think polls are a great idea for an online class, because it allows the professor to quickly and simply see where the students think about the question but it also allows the students to see what their fellow classmates are thinking. When in a classroom you have the option to talk to your classmates during class and get their views on an assignment or how their doing in class but on with an online class you can sometimes feel as if you are the only one in the class. I would absolutely answer every time, because I am also very curious to see what everyone else is thinking about the topics.

  4. I think we should continue the polls. It gives me an idea about how other students react to the reading. I have no issue participating in future polls.

  5. I am indifferent about the administering of class polling. However, I do find it clever. It assists in obtaining the collective feedback, that would otherwise be difficult to obtain, from an online course. It affords the professor a glimpse into the feelings of the class, and opens the possibility to make necessary changes that may better accommodate both the professor and students. The blog coupled with the poll creates a forum where we can share our thoughts and concerns while simultaneously allowing us to relate with one another. Having said that, I will commit to participating in class polls.

P.S. At first I was unaware of the poll in the margin of the blog.

    1. Agreed I have no idea there were polls. I don't care for them because I think people don't take them seriously. But I am now excited to see the line of questioning a poll in this sort of class will bring in turns of corralling popular belief.

  6. I was completely unaware that these polls existed until I read Jared's comment. Now that i know they are there, I definitely think they are a great addition to the course. It would help the professor have a better understanding of the range of students in this class. It will tell him what the students are trying to gain from the class (if anything), and how they feel about the topics we discuss as well as the materials we read/watch. Polls are perfect for an online course.

  7. Like many others, I did not realize the polls existed until today. Ironically, I saw the polls for the first time before reading the assignment for this specific discussion. I definitely encourage continuing the polls, and I am dedicated to answering them.

Since we are on the topic of the polls, I was particularly surprised to see a great many of my classmates with the mindset that they will receive an A in the class. I am doubtful of my progress in the class because I have had some challenges starting off. If you guys don't mind, what are your reasonings to believe you will do so well?

  8. Did we have a poll already? How many did we have? Why I am lost on this subject? For future reference, if I know about it, I will certainly participate.
